THE BRIEF
Makao Kwetu was commissioned to design a private residence for Ms. Jackie, with a layout that prioritized both security and visibility across the site. The client requested clear sightlines to the main entrance from key living areas—particularly the master bedroom and living room—while maintaining a balance between openness and privacy. The design also needed to integrate universal access without compromising on elegance and materiality.
THE INSPIRATION
The home’s orientation is a direct response to both the site and climate—strategically positioned to prevent the long facades from facing due east or west, minimizing solar heat gain while optimizing natural light. The arrival sequence is defined by a clean, functional flow: the driveway leads directly to a central parking court, subtly dividing the plot into a welcoming front yard and a more private backyard. A soft stone path links the two, guiding movement alongside the house. Materials are intentionally honest and tactile—stone grounds the house with a sense of permanence, while generous glass openings and carefully selected joinery reflect the client’s appreciation for craftsmanship and transparency. Raised 700mm off the ground, the home integrates a wide, gently sloped ramp at the entrance, ensuring smooth, universal access throughout.
THE RESULT
The result is a grounded, contemporary home that prioritizes thoughtful layout, accessibility, and connection to its site. Visual transparency, natural materials, and spatial clarity define the experience—while the balance between guest-facing and private outdoor spaces ensures flexibility for social and intimate moments alike. Ms. Jackie’s Residence reflects a quiet confidence—designed with purpose, precision, and an enduring sense of place.
