THE BRIEF
We were tasked with designing an eco-conscious resort in the heart of Mpunge, along the serene shores of Lake Victoria. The client’s vision was clear: a secluded, nature-embracing retreat that caters to a select, discerning clientele. The project called for a design that not only respects but celebrates the lush natural environment—preserving every tree and working with the land rather than against it.
THE INSPIRATION
The concept draws from the ethos of tropical minimalism—where simplicity meets raw beauty. Inspired by the untouched vegetation and the quiet majesty of the lakeside, the masterplan was developed around existing natural features. Public areas are positioned near the entrance and open spaces, gradually transitioning into more intimate experiences as guests move towards the lake. A lakeside restaurant anchors the resort, while a series of discreetly placed cabins branch off to one side, offering privacy and uninterrupted immersion in nature. Structures are oriented to shield interiors from harsh sunlight, while the landscape remains intentionally wild—lush, organic, and unmanicured, allowing the natural setting to lead the aesthetic.
THE RESULT
The result is an eco-resort that breathes with the land—quiet, refined, and deeply connected to its surroundings. Built with restraint and intention, the architecture treads lightly, preserving the environment and enhancing the guest’s relationship to it. Mpunge Eco-Resort offers a calm, introspective luxury, where minimalism and tropical richness coexist—creating a sanctuary that feels both grounding and extraordinary.
