Makao Kwetu was invited to develop a concept design for a contemporary resort on the island district of Kalangala, overlooking Lake Victoria. The client sought a bold, visually striking proposal that would capture the serenity and grandeur of the location, while also addressing the practical challenges posed by the area's tropical climate and occasional flooding.
THE BRIEF
THE INSPIRATION
The design takes its cue from the drama of the lakefront and the elemental beauty of Kalangala’s lush landscape. Drawing on contemporary architecture, the main structure features a refined material palette of glass, metal, and natural stone—creating a strong yet elegant contrast against the softness of the surrounding environment. Elevated one meter off the ground, the design responds to the site’s flooding potential, allowing for natural water flow beneath the structure. Expansive glazing maximizes views of Lake Victoria, while clean structural lines and airy volumes bring a sense of calm, luxury, and modern sophistication. An infinity pool, positioned as both a reflective surface and a sculptural element, anchors the experience—enhancing the resort’s atmosphere without overpowering the natural setting.
The result is a refined, lakeside concept that celebrates light, horizon, and materiality. Though still in its conceptual stage, the Kalangala Resort sets the tone for a destination that is both architectural and immersive—balancing contemporary form with environmental responsiveness. It promises to be a serene yet striking retreat, seamlessly integrating comfort, aesthetic intention, and the rhythms of nature.
